IKEA PAX vs custom closet comes down to one question: does your space fit IKEA’s sizes, or do you need a closet built to fit your space? PAX is a good, affordable system when your walls suit its set frame sizes and you’re happy to assemble it yourself. A custom closet costs more but is designed, built and installed to the inch, with no gaps to fill.
We design and install custom closets in Edmonton, and we don’t sell or install PAX, so we’re not neutral. We’ll still tell you when PAX is the better buy.
What’s the real difference between IKEA PAX and a custom closet?
The difference is where the design starts. PAX starts from a set of standard frames you arrange in your room, while a custom closet starts from your room’s measurements and is built to fill it.
IKEA’s PAX frames come in set depths of 35 or 58 cm and heights of 201 or 236 cm, in a handful of widths. You plan your closet around those boxes, then fill whatever is left over with filler panels or leave it open. A custom closet has no standard boxes. Every rod, shelf and drawer is placed for what you own and how you get dressed.

How much does IKEA PAX cost compared with a custom closet in Edmonton?
PAX costs less up front. IKEA Canada lists PAX wardrobe combinations with doors from $255 to $1,625, while our custom reach-in closets run $999–$2,999 and walk-ins $2,999–$9,999+, with installation included.
The PAX number grows once you add doors, drawers, interior fittings and trim for a built-in look. Our 2026 custom closet cost guide puts PAX-style systems at roughly $500–$2,000 for materials, plus your time to assemble and install. A single PAX frame, 50 × 58 × 236 cm, is $160 on its own. Prices change, so check IKEA’s site before you budget.
When is IKEA PAX the right choice?
PAX is the right choice when your budget is tight, your wall is a plain, square run that suits its sizes, and you’re comfortable assembling and anchoring heavy furniture. It’s also a sensible pick for a rental, because it’s freestanding furniture you can take with you.
Be ready for the work. IKEA says each frame takes two people to assemble and must be secured to the wall with the anchoring device in the box. If that sounds like a good Saturday, PAX will serve you well.
When is a custom closet worth the extra money?
A custom closet is worth it when your space doesn’t suit standard sizes, or when you want it designed, installed and warrantied for you. It’s built once, covered by a lifetime warranty on wooden components, and designed to be the last closet you’ll need.
It also makes sense if you plan to stay in the home for a few years. You use every inch of the wall, you don’t lose a weekend to assembly, and our installers clean up completely when they’re done.
In our experience, an IKEA PAX is not designed for a custom fit. It’s a make-it-work approach. You take the sizes IKEA makes and work your room around them. A custom closet works the other way around: the room comes first, and the closet is made to fit it.

Can IKEA PAX look built in?
Yes, PAX can look built in, but it takes extra work. People add filler panels, trim and crown moulding, and scribe pieces to uneven walls and ceilings so the frames read as one unit.
A built-in PAX usually takes:
- a raised base or plinth, so the frames sit level and line up with the baseboards
- filler panels at the sides to close the gaps to the walls
- crown moulding or a boxed-in top to close the gap to the ceiling
- scribing the panels to walls and ceilings that aren’t straight
- caulk and paint, so the trim and frames read as one piece
That work is where the savings shrink. You’re buying extra material and doing finish carpentry, or paying someone to. A custom closet already looks built in, because it is.

Can you use IKEA PAX in a walk-in closet?
Yes, you can line a walk-in closet with PAX frames, and it’s a common approach. The trouble spots are corners, windows, doorways and sloped walls, where set frame sizes leave gaps or dead space.
IKEA sells corner units for PAX, but a corner unit still has fixed dimensions. In a walk-in, a custom walk-in closet can wrap corners, work around a window and add an island where the room allows, all sized to your floor plan.

Will IKEA PAX fit a sloped ceiling, bulkhead or older Edmonton home?
Often not without modification. PAX frames are straight, full-height boxes, so a sloped ceiling, a basement bulkhead or out-of-square walls in an older home mean cutting, filling or accepting a gap.
Height matters even in a new build. IKEA notes the tall frame can only be assembled upright if your ceiling is at least 93¼ inches. A custom closet is measured on site and built around bulkheads, slopes and walls that aren’t quite square.
How long does IKEA PAX last?
PAX is covered by a 10-year IKEA warranty against defects in materials and workmanship, which is a fair sign of how long IKEA expects it to hold up. How long it lasts in practice depends on how carefully it’s assembled, anchored and loaded.
The frames are particleboard and fibreboard with a paper-foil finish. Our closets carry a lifetime warranty on wooden components and a 2-year warranty on installation. Because our own team does the install, we stand behind that too.
What are the alternatives to IKEA PAX?
The main alternatives are another ready-made system from a big-box store, building your own, or a custom closet company that designs and installs to the inch. The first two keep costs down; the third trades a higher price for fit, installation and warranty.
If you’re unsure which way to go, start with the room. Measure the wall, note anything that breaks it up (a window, a bulkhead, a slope), and compare that against PAX’s sizes in IKEA’s planner. If it fits cleanly, PAX may be all you need.
